About Jimmy
For more than two decades, Jimmy Smith has been helping people enjoy wine with greater confidence.
Through West London Wine School, Wine With Jimmy and a wide range of international teaching, speaking and ambassadorial roles, he has worked with thousands of wine lovers, hospitality professionals and trade members at every stage of their exploration of wine—from complete beginners discovering wine for the first time to students pursuing advanced professional qualifications.
As founder and principal educator of West London Wine School and creator of Wine With Jimmy—one of the world's most established independent wine education platforms—Jimmy is recognised as one of the UK's leading wine educators. He is an Certified WSET Educator, approved Wine Scholar Guild Educator, international speaker, regional wine specialist and official ambassador for numerous wine regions and producer organisations around the world.
A Different Approach to Wine Education
Wine has taken Jimmy to some remarkable places over the years. Long before online tastings and wine influencers became commonplace, he was travelling through wine regions, meeting producers and learning directly from the people who make wine. Those who have known Jimmy for sometime will be familiar with Jeff, the campervan that accompanied him on countless wine adventures and helped shape his understanding of the world's wine regions.
Those experiences continue to influence his teaching today, but education has always been at the heart of Jimmy's career.
His philosophy is simple: wine should be accessible without being oversimplified, educational without being intimidating and enjoyable at every stage of learning.
Wine appreciation isn’t just about qualifications, technical vocabulary or years of study. Most people already know more about their own tastes than they realise. Often they simply need the confidence to trust their judgement, understand what they enjoy and discover more wines that suit their palate.
For those who wish to pursue formal study, qualifications can be transformational. WSET and Wine Scholar Guild programmes open doors to careers, deepen understanding and provide internationally recognised benchmarks of achievement. For others, wine education is simply about getting more enjoyment from what they drink. Both goals are equally valid.
That approach has helped make West London Wine School one of the UK's most respected independent wine education providers and earned Jimmy a reputation as a trusted educator among students, producers and industry professionals alike.
“It’s the all-important infectious enthusiasm and passion for the world of wine that enables Jimmy Smith to communicate to his audience in a relaxed, welcoming and fun way.”
Wine Education and International Reach
Jimmy is the founder and principal educator of West London Wine School, where he delivers WSET qualifications, Wine Scholar Guild programmes, specialist regional courses, corporate events and consumer tastings.
His reach extends well beyond London. In addition to teaching throughout the UK, Jimmy works internationally through educational partnerships including Commonwealth Wine School in Boston, Massachusetts, and the Shalva Khetsuriani Sommelier School in Georgia.
His students come from every corner of the wine world. Some are taking their first steps into wine and want to feel more confident choosing a bottle. Others are studying for WSET or Wine Scholar Guild qualifications, pursuing careers in hospitality, retail, importing or distribution, or developing specialist expertise in particular wine regions.
Their goals may differ, but Jimmy's approach remains the same: to provide clear, engaging and practical education that helps people move forward with confidence, wherever their interests in wine may take them.
As both an Approved WSET Educator and approved Wine Scholar Guild Educator, Jimmy has developed particular expertise in regional wine education, helping students explore the history, geography, culture and winemaking traditions that define the world's great wine regions.
Regional Expertise and Ambassador Roles
Jimmy's reputation as an educator has led to collaborations with many of the wine world's most respected regional organisations. He serves as an official ambassador for a number of leading wine regions and producer groups, including Wines of California, Wines of Rioja, Grandes Pagos de España and Wines of Virginia. Over the years, he has worked with regional wine bodies across Europe and North America, delivering educational programmes, trade training, masterclasses and consumer events. These partnerships reflect a career-long commitment to understanding wine at its source. Through regular visits to wine regions and close relationships with producers, Jimmy brings first-hand experience and regional expertise into every class, tasting and presentation. For event organisers, businesses and industry professionals, this combination of educational expertise, regional knowledge and engaging communication makes Jimmy a trusted speaker, presenter, host and moderator.

Why Wine With Jimmy?
Whether you're considering a wine course, studying for a qualification, looking for a speaker, exploring a wine region for the first time or simply searching for your next great bottle, the aim is the same.
To help you move forward with confidence.
For some people, that means passing a WSET exam or developing a professional career in wine. For others, it means understanding what they enjoy, navigating a restaurant wine list with greater ease or feeling more adventurous when choosing a bottle.
There is no single right way to enjoy wine, and there is no single destination.
Jimmy's role is simply to help people get where they want to go.
Because wine doesn't have to be complicated to be rewarding. Whether you're studying for your next qualification, choosing a bottle from a supermarket shelf or ordering from a restaurant wine list, the more confidence you have, the more enjoyable wine becomes.
Jimmy & Jeff
Much of the passion for wine Jimmy has gained over the years is all thanks to his bright orange 1971 VW Campervan named Jeff. Jeff, Jimmy's trusty (albeit it slow-moving) steed has taken him on countless wine expeditions. Jeff has ventured across the sea, whizzed (in fourth gear) down motorways ... as well as struggled up them ... and bounced along dusty, bumpy lanes all with the sole purpose of visiting spectacular vineyards and meet the amazing people behind them.
Jimmy's travels in Jeff have given him the opportunity to break bread with some of the greatest wine producers in Europe and have also inspired him to travel the rest of the world, with the ultimate goal being to learn and expand on his knowledge as well as bring back some amazing wine for everyone to taste through his masterclasses at West London Wine School as well as enjoy at his London wine bar - Streatham Wine House.
Jimmy has educated over 6000 wine students.
